Train with Scoliosis & Spinal Fusion
Live Online classes
We work interactively via an online video call to guide you through each session, offering feedback and corrections where necessary, gaining an understanding of how your body works and moves to ensure that your pilates practise is effective and enjoyable.
Each 45 minute session provides a chance to connect with your body, taking time to reset and breathe before getting back to the everyday grind.
Joining a group class will also give you access to our private community facebook group where we provide a space to keep in touch and get involved with other members.
You will also gain free access to our wonderful on-demand studio, a fantastic resource for additional scoliosis movement sessions throughout the week.

Pilates
Pilates can be defined as exercise that aims to strengthen the body in an even way, with particular emphasis on core strength to improve general fitness and wellbeing (NHS).
Why is Pilates good for Spinal fusions and Scoliosis?
Pilates for Scoliosis and Spinal fusion is a fantastic tool to connect with your body through strength and mobility, understanding how to manage and mitigate pain, increase your core strength and love your body inside and out.
Try our specialised Spinal fusion Pilates, aiming to strengthen our core as well as above and below our rods, build your own brace with our Scoliosis specific Pilates, or join our main group sessions for a more low-impact route to a stronger, more mobile body.
Low-Impact Cardio
HIIT by nature is high impact…we teach a modified cardio called ‘LISS’. This stands for Low Impact Steady State – the perfect alternate to popular HIIT sessions, providing a less jumpy alternate to cardiovascular exercise. Our LISS sessions are wonderful for increasing energy levels and keeping fit with an instructor you trust.
Why is Low-Impact HIIT good for Spinal fusions and Scoliosis?
By lowering the impact of key movements, LISS is safe for spines that need a little TLC. Improving Cardiovascular function is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle and look after our bodies, the same for anyone without scoliosis too.
Cardiovascular health can impact pain levels, sleep quality, lung capacity and stress management – it’s really important for all of us.
We run these classes for a mix of those with scoliosis & spinal fusion as the moves don’t use any crunching or bending – we of course avoid the devil…BURPEES! None to see here thank you 😂

Emily
T5-L4 Spinal Fusion
Emily is the founder of Build & Breathe Scoliosis – not your typical yogi, she has two metal rods fusing her spine together following corrective scoliosis surgery.
Using movement for rehabilitation and pain management afforded Emily a new perspective on exercise, moving to nurture her body rather than punish it trying to fit a certain body type.
Empowering individuals who struggle with low body confidence and anxiety around exercise due to hidden illness is integral to the Build & Breathe ethos, advocating the emotional benefits of exercise as well as the physical.
Emily is personally passionate about raising awareness of the impact of stress on our physical bodies, especially how it triggers symptoms with chronic conditions.
Lottie
Spinal Fusion at 7 years old
Having her spinal fusion at just 7 years old, Lottie knows what it’s like to grow up feeling a little different. She has a baby fusion and a baby curve – a fun cocktail!
Lottie is passionate about growing a connection with our bodies through both pushing ourselves to build confidence, and slowing it down through relaxation, looking inwards. This approach is transformative for those with long term pain, or anxiety around their condition.
Katie
Spinal Fusion at 30
Having her spinal fusion a little later at 30 years old Katie lived with Scoliosis for a long time and is learning how to look after her new spine.
Katie has always used movement to manage pain levels and keep as strong as possible – she brings a lovely relaxing tone to our classes, always leaving you calm and stretched. Her approach focuses on connecting with your body to learn what feels good for YOU, which is incredibly supportive of long term health.
Hope
Mild Scoliosis
Both Hope and her twin sister have grown up with Scoliosis that has not been corrected by surgery. Hope has a lot of experience with adapting her favourite cardio & strength training moves to be suitable for us scoli’s and has trained specifically to understand spinal fusions too.
Hope provides the perfect mix of bringing sunshine to her sessions, whilst giving an opportunity to literally punch out your stress – it’s a great outlet, working to improve cardiovascular function in a fun and safe way.
Pilates
With her T4-L5 spinal fusion, Pilates trainer Emily is perfectly placed to guide you along your scoliosis journey, whether you’re hoping for core strengthening and pain management, through to a powerful, sweaty session.

16 & Unders Pilates
Having her spinal fusion at just 7 years old, Lottie knows what it’s like to grow up feeling a little different. She has a baby fusion and a baby curve – a fun cocktail!

What is 16 & Unders Pilates?
The same as our main Pilates classes, these sessions use a mixture of specialised movements to build strength and mobility. Based on Pilates principles, we’ve adjusted to create a safe methodology focusing on building core strength to support our spines, whilst mobilising through the rest of the body.
Why 16 & Unders’ Pilates for Spinal fusions and Scoliosis?
We were keen to create a class that not only gave younger people the chance to keep strong from the get go, but also to connect with others in a similar age group to form strong emotional support too.
One of our key missions with Build & Breathe is to create the support we wish we had had around our diagnosis and surgery – this is the first step. Building a community of younger people has been a really powerful insight into how strong we can be post-op – we’re already noticing a huge difference in wellbeing.
